Dancing, fireworks, music, and food, just some of the ingredients in the annual celebration to give thanks to the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the fishermen. Los Cristianos is still a fishing community at heart so they really push the boat out. All this takes place a short walk downhill from Hotel Paradise Park.
The car park in the centre of town next to the Valdes Centre becomes the Recinto Ferial showground where the main events take to the stage. Food and drink stalls surround the seating area and beyond that the fun fair has plenty of thrills to offer. The first show this year is on Thursday 29th August for the older generation with dance and music from 10pm. The next night (Friday 30th) there is a grand election of the children’s queen from 9.30pm followed by a dance with the Mambo Latino orchestra. All over the weekend the showground will be in full swing until the early hours of the morning.
The fishermen’s quay and the old Los Cristianos beach are the other focal points for celebrations. On Saturday 31st August a morning of childrens games will lead to Cuban music in the Plaza de la Pescadora (by the fisherwomans statue). From 7pm there will be a parade through the streets down by the beach and a childrens festival at the showground from 9pm and of course more live music.
Sunday features music and games from 11am at the Plaza de la Pescadora including free zumba classes. There will be football and other games at the beach ending with a foam party at 4.30pm. Over at the showground the fun fair wont let up all weekend and Deliciosa will provide the music from 11pm, that’s also the time the big firework display will shoot through the sky at the beach.
Monday 2nd September is the last full day with much of the activities taking place at the Plaza de la Pescadora including a parade of bicycles. Watch the sea from 4pm, decorating the fishing boats is a key part of the day and they will form a colourful parade as they tour around the harbour. If you still have some energy left the 11pm dance at the showground will round off the celebrations in style.
